The Exploded View Materials & Methods

Search for large-scale climate-friendly building and living

The Exploded View Materials & Methods is an installation of a model home scale 1:4 made of circular and biobased materials and methods. This project models the fascinating existing and future possibilities of sustainable building: eggshell floors, hemp bricks, vulcanic mussel shell laminate, self healing fungal paint, fruit leather chairs and a toilet made from sewage waste are just a few examples.

Check out the website to take a full virtual tour of your future house. Read all about the materials and methods we discovered in our 2 year open source study and find out more about the practical and currently underexposed values, such as beneficial health impacts these materials have.

The Exploded View was the flagship of the Embassy of Circular and Biobased Building during the World Design Event of Dutch Design Week 2020 and is now on an international tour. With this installation the designers stimulate the demand for biobased materials and circular methods through storytelling and imagination, by making both professionals in construction or architecture and consumers more aware of their amazing qualities. The installation also acts as a catalyst for innovation by offering designers a stage and stimulating them to develop their innovative materials further.
